January 2013

 Dear Friends and Supporters,

The year 2013 may bring more challenges than we have experienced in many years.  We believe this will principally be due to the policies of the Obama Administration and their negative effect down to the lowest levels of government.  As we all know by now, a majority of Americans voted to return Barack Obama to the White House in spite of favoring same-sex marriage, abortion, and having his party’s platform even exclude God from the country’s agenda.  All of this is not to mention his increases in taxation and government spending.  Of course, at the heart of all of this is the growth of government and that is why it reaches down to the lowest levels.

When the Defense of Marriage Act (“DOMA”) was passed during the Clinton Administration, we were grateful for a national policy favoring heterosexual marriage.  However, under the Obama Administration, the U.S. Justice Department has taken the position that it will not enforce DOMA.  This is partially responsible for the results in lower federal courts holding DOMA unconstitutional.  The U.S. Supreme Court has now said it will review those cases.  It is probably a foregone conclusion at this point that DOMA is unconstitutional.  That will remove any federal impediment to recognizing same-sex marriage in all federal programs and laws.  The principal reason we say this is because in the 2003 case of Lawrence v. Texas, the court applied the equal protection clause to strike down the Texas anti-sodomy law.  Similar reasoning will be applied in the review of DOMA.

This month’s Educational Update is a word of advice to crisis pregnancy centers.  CPC’s are on the frontline of battling the negative effects of abortion in the lives of women and saving the lives of their unborn children.  With Obama’s unmitigated support for destruction of human life, we expect CPC’s will be called upon more frequently and be subjected to more legal and political pressure.  If you are involved with a CPC, please encourage them and let us know if you have any questions.

Finally, we are in high gear preparing for the 2012 regular session of the Alabama Legislature.  We have several abortion and religion related bills in preparation.  We will provide you with updates of those as events occur.

We have a lot to do this year.  We are eager to join the fray.  Please continue your financial support of our efforts.  We are very grateful for your support.  We are encouraged by your expressions of support, both financially and through your prayers and encouraging comments.  With best wishes, I am,

                                                                                     Yours very truly,

                                                                                     A. Eric Johnston
