4/1/2009 - April 2009 SLI Newsletter

April 2009

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month’s Educational Update deals with the most significant gambling legislation ever introduced in Alabama. We have written several legal opinions related to the proposed constitutional amendment and we provided testimony in the House and Senate Tourism and Marketing Committees. We are also working on pro-life legislation. The Umbilical Cord Blood Use Act has come out of the House Health Committee. We are trying to get the Healthcare Conscience Bill on the committee agenda, particularly in light of Barack Obama’s pending repeal of the HHS conscience regulations.

These are important issues for Alabama. For SLI, we personally have a very important issue. This month’s newsletter must be an appeal for financial assistance. As with many nonprofit organizations, we depend on end-of-year gifts and regular monthly support to meet our financial goals. Due to international economic problems, we, like others, received quite a bit less than normal at the end of the year and our monthly support is down. We have very little reserves and very soon will not be able to meet ordinary obligations.

Permit me to remind our readers that we provide daily legal advice on a number of issues within our stated purposes, viz., religious freedom, sanctity of life, parental rights, etcetera. During the legislative session we have a commitment there of about two whole days per week, on average.

At the same time, it is highly unusual for any legal fee to be paid to anyone. As tent-making lawyers, we commit to these efforts because there is a need and because we believe in them. At the same time, we have ongoing overhead and expense costs. If you have ever been involved in any legal process, you know how expensive it is. If we do not have adequate support from you, we cannot meet that bare minimum. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we do not pay tax on the money received and the contributions by you are tax deductible.

On the back of this newsletter is contribution information. If we receive $12 per year from everyone who receives this newsletter, it would pay for newsletter costs. I urge everyone to please make that commitment of sending $12 per year. More importantly, I urge you to make continuing monthly contributions to our efforts. Do so within your budget, but please do so.

We have many faithful supporters and we greatly appreciate your trust in our efforts. Thank you for your commitment. We urge everyone to join in that commitment and we promise you, by God’s grace, that we will continue our mission.

If at anytime you have questions or comments, please feel free to communicate with us. We are grateful for your financial support and your prayers. Continue to pray for us during these difficult days, for both an increase in our financial support, as well as SLI’s work. With personal regards, I am,

Yours very truly,

A. Eric Johnston
